THE IMPORTANCE OF
ODOUR

Pigs use their noses as a key element of their breeding behaviour. Odour is critical, as information conveyed by pheromones triggers a sexual response in the female – indicating when she is in heat (oestrus) and ready for breeding. A good mix of pheromones is therefore needed to help the farmer best detect oestrus.

THE RISKS OF POOR HEAT DETECTION

Modern pig breeding requires three key players: a fertile female, a sexually attractive boar and a farmer/stock person. Any of them can strongly affect the reproductive success on the farm.

So key questions are:

  • Is your boar producing enough odour?
  • Is the female in heat?

REDUCE RISK – ADD BOARBETTER®

Heat detection relies on identifying the sexual response of the female to a boar. Adding new BoarBetter to your breeding process helps reduce the risks of a poor sexual response in the female.

WHY HEAT DETECTION MATTERS

Heat (oestrus) detection is one of the most important tasks in any swine breeding system. Failure to detect heat in sows and gilts, or errors in detection, are two major causes of poor reproductive performance. Making heat detection more reliable reduces the risk of non-productive days and enables better timing of insemination for optimum total births.
